Saving our Species - Malleefowl
Saving our Species (SoS) is an innovative statewide program that addresses the growing number of plants and animals in NSW facing extinction and aims to secure these in the wild. The NSW government funds SoS and has pledged $100 million over 5 years to protect the State’s threatened species, which commenced in July 2016.
The Malleefowl is one of 6 iconic species identified as a priority to the SoS program as it is of significant social, cultural and economic value, as such the community expects them to be effectively managed and protected. The species is listed as Endangered in NSW and Vulnerable by the Commonwealth. The Malleefowl conservation project aims to secure the Malleefowl in the wild in NSW for 100 years and will actively engage local communities to achieve this. The project will also encourage the NSW community to identify the Malleefowl as a flagship for threatened species conservation in NSW.
