Echinoderms of the WA Museum 1959 - 1976 (Part A)

Field notesWestern Australian Museum Collections and Research

Experience the flow of items into the Western Australian Museum (WAM) collections by transcribing the original register books containing records of donated and collected natural history items spanning from the very inception of the museum in 1895, up until the advent of computer-based systems in the late 90’s. This register contains records of echinoderms collected by WAM curators and their associates from the waters of Western Australia as well as interstate and overseas between the years 1959 and 1976. Echinoderms are a major group of marine invertebrates characterised by their hard exoskeletons and radial symmetry. Through millions of years of evolution, echinoderms have produced a whole host of body forms that may commonly be known as sea stars, sea urchins, brittle stars, sand dollars, sea cucumbers, sea lilies and basket stars. Each record listed in this register book relates to an echinoderm that was contained in our dry and wet collections at WAM at some stage. Your transcriptions will ensure the preservation of this important information and make it more accessible to the public, visiting researchers and WAM staff.
