The Hobart Convict Penitentiary - is an internationally significant convict site – located right in the heart of Hobart CBD. In the early 1830’s, a service in the chapel of the Van Diemen’s Land Prisoners’ Barracks Penitentiary was far from a serene and holy experience with convict cells located under the floor boards.

Each of the records in this register provides the details of the charges brought against women during this time. They include: date; the magistrate on duty in the court; the woman's name; the transportation ship; the original length of the sentence; the alleged crime; the verdict and punishment. Detailed witness statements giving further information about the circumstances of the charges are also often included.
